Between Tonight & Tomorrow
Sometimes I hear the phone at night
If I don’t answer, maybe it was you
Sometimes when I go out at night
If I don’t know where I’m going, maybe I’d find you
In the in-between
Where it hits you
Between tonight and tomorrow
So try and hold on
In the in-between
Between tonight and tomorrow
Sometimes I lay awake at night
Hear the clock tick
It’s the only way I know I’m in the room
Sometimes when the music dies down I hear the voices
None of them are you
In the in-between
Where it hits you
Between tonight and tomorrow
So try and hold on
In the in-between
Between tonight and tomorrow
Between Tonight & Tomorrow
Sometimes I hear the phone at night
If I don’t answer, maybe it was you
Sometimes when I go out at night
If I don’t know where I’m going, maybe I’d find you
In the in-between
Where it hits you

Sometimes when the music dies down I hear the voices
None of them are you

2023 has been a busy year for Matt Joe Gow. In March he released 'Between Tonight & Tomorrow', an album that dives deep into matters of life & death, and navigating the rough terrain of the heart and soul via his Antipodean alt-country stylings. The album received widespread airplay on ABC and community radio, charted on the ARIA and Australian Independent Release charts in its first week of release and garnered various 5 star reviews.
Joe Gow celebrated the success of the album with an East Coast tour, before releasing a new single with fellow NZ songwriter Kerryn Fields ('Your Heart Of Gold'), that saw the pair undertake an extensive national tour of New Zealand plus selected dates across Australia. While across the Tasman, Joe Gow was the proud 2023 winner of the prestigious MLT Songwriting Award at New Zealand's Country Music Awards.
At those numerous live shows, Joe Gow began to notice how well the album title-track was being received. The song offers insight into the isolation felt by many over recent years, the lyrics weaving spaciously around a hypnotic acoustic pattern to resounding and haunting effect. It quickly became a firm fan favourite, inspiring him to build on that positive response and record a new acoustic and even more intimate 'reprise' version of the song. "The song was tracked live off the floor at Woodshed Studios, Melbourne with myself on vocals/acoustic guitar and Andy Pollock on mandolin," he explains.
Joe Gow and his studio collaborators Chris Elliott and Andrew Pollock were so pleased with the new recording that they took the creative spirit even further, recasting and remixing the song as an emotive trip-hop space ballad and an ethereal and weightless ambient excursion – both giving Gow's lyrics different, yet equally soulful and compelling backdrops.
"The remixes are the brainchild of my long time engineer Chris Elliott," explains Joe Gow. "We share a love of trip hop (Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky) and he felt the style would offer a unique perspective – quite different to the original or the reprise version. Also, as a producer it was nice to have a chance to explore and express different influences and have them work so effectively on this song, and in the EP format." Titled Closer To Tomorrow, the EP brings together these new and fascinating takes on a song that has a deep and personal significance to Joe Gow, dedicated as it and the EP are, to his mother who passed away last year.
