Between Tonight & Tomorrow

by Matt Joe Gow

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Between Tonight & Tomorrow is the new record from Melbourne-based, New Zealand-born musician Matt Joe Gow. The follow-up to the award-winning Break, Rattle And Roll, it is sonically a departure from its predecessor with raw, unvarnished production, and because of that has an undeniable directness and vulnerability.

“We had a clear intention to make a stripped back record, to capture the performances and sound as honestly as possible, and to abandon many standard conventional studio production techniques, which allowed for the most accurate picture of how we sound as a band, live.”

From the prominent intro rattle of a guitar string on the southern swagger-bound ‘Shipwreck’ through to the heartfelt alt. country rocker ’Til My Whole Heart Bursts’ it is clear that the raw production serves as the most direct delivery of what is Joe Gow’s most personal and introspective album. Themes of reminiscence, perspective, death and rebirth are all weighty subjects that Joe Gow approaches with a realism and vulnerability that perhaps come with the comfort and support of a dedicated fanbase, one he has built from years of touring, now four albums deep into his career.

Oh the child has made you
Close to God, Lord, closing in
Fear the tide that binds you
Should the years all come undone

The album’s title track offers insight into the isolation felt by many over recent years, and serves as the centrepiece to the record. On this reflective, mid-tempo track, the lyrics weave spaciously around a hypnotic acoustic pattern to resounding and haunting effect. The song eventually crescendos on the back of a soul-stirring lead guitar refrain, begging a repeat listen and perhaps providing some comfort in those late hours.

Sometimes I hear the phone at night, if I don’t answer, maybe it was you…

Whilst the Stones-esque jangle of ‘NYJJ’ or gospel qualities of popular ‘Sweet Collapse’ reminds us there is a versatility to his long-time backing band The Dead Leaves, and an innate ability to steer the song stylistically in whatever direction best suits it, whilst retaining an authentic coherence. It is that authenticity that has always been at the heart of Joe Gow’s albums, and one that resonates brilliantly on Between Tonight & Tomorrow.

Shipwreck 04:05
Shipwreck It is black like the darkness rising
Feel like a ship been sunken
Getting old like the soul inside me
Still beautiful like nothing I've seen Let it roll like we're rolling on a river
Coming down like a night turned morning
So make it through now baby, just make it through
Whatever gets you through that wicked night And a shipwreck’s no place to start
After they break your heart
Don't you fill my cup with those salty tears
This ship’s been sunken for years It is burnt like the world around us
Broke like a promise been made on a whim
But see it through now baby, just see it through
Ain’t the tears that keep you lying awake at night And a shipwreck’s no place to start
After they break your heart
Don't you fill my cup with those salty tears
This ship’s been sunken for years and year and years

’Til My Whole Heart Bursts So I got beat up by this town
 Barely tangled up in blue
Well I got broken for the cause
We all want to be more than flesh on top of flesh Maybe I'll love you 'til my whole heart bursts Baby, but we'll make it through
Barely held together, worn like leather Baby, but we'll make it through Through the dark Through the storm Through the door, and we're born
Maybe I'll love you 'til my whole heart bursts How I got caught up in this noise
But never dragged to make these tracks
 Belly crawled along this path
In order to be more than flesh on top of flesh Maybe I'll love you 'til my whole heart bursts Baby, but we'll make it through
Barely held together, worn like leather Baby, but we'll make it through Through the dark Through the storm Through the door, and we're born
Maybe I'll love you 'til my whole heart bursts So we’ll make a break for higher ground
Where there’s nothing above
Cos there’s nothing below Through the dark Through the storm Through the door, and we're born
Maybe I'll love you 'til my whole heart bursts

Between Tonight & Tomorrow Sometimes I hear the phone at night
If I don’t answer, maybe it was you Sometimes when I go out at night
If I don’t know where I’m going, maybe I’d find you In the in-between
 Where it hits you
Between tonight and tomorrow  So try and hold on
In the in-between  Between tonight and tomorrow Sometimes I lay awake at night
Hear the clock tick It’s the only way I know I’m in the room Sometimes when the music dies down I hear the voices None of them are you In the in-between
 Where it hits you
Between tonight and tomorrow  So try and hold on
In the in-between  Between tonight and tomorrow

Go Ahead, Celebrate Little girl Lulu Cornes in the pouring rain She never thought twice about love, the money or the pain Won’t find a pretty smile like hers on no magazine Roll the dice twice on love and she’ll do it all again That’s twice I had to mend Hey go ahead celebrate, celebrate like we used to Hey go ahead celebrate, celebrate Kept it to herself but Loretta dreams of the ocean Like a jewel in a crown young girl shine like midday sun So the scene was a beautiful thing on a moonstruck boat And she wondered if the silence stretched on all the way back home We’ve all got wounds to heal Hey go ahead celebrate, celebrate like we used to Hey go ahead celebrate, celebrate I ain’t gonna tell you something more We’ve all got wounds to heal

Sweet Collapse I took the bandage off to let it breathe See with the blindfold gone you can see From the port I kept moving I said: “A river to the sea” Times I was in too deep Take a hold of me now In my sweet collapse Because we ain't going back You heard me right my rose Take a hold of me now In my sweet collapse There were nights I barely felt the cold Other days I was young but feeling old Times I’d barely recognise you Or recognise myself Took the mirror off the shelf Take a hold of me now In my sweet collapse Because we ain't going back You heard me right my rose Take a hold of me now In my sweet Collapse I dream him still, I dream you all With so many lost before the fall In a heavy fog kept moving Though my heart’s back there Where my soul laid bare

NYJJ 05:07
NYJJ So go put on your dancing shoes Not that you’ll need them where we’re going anyhow I know that you humoured me once or twice So I’m happy to do it now You ask me baby “Does it feel right?” I try to tell you straight, I don’t know I just can’t shake it I just can’t shake it I’ll leave off now for New York June/July somewhere warm I’ll leave off now for New York Somewhere warm Maybe we’ll be right Okay maybe I ain’t straight with you If I’m hiding all the crooked things inside But baby sometimes I ain’t got that wheel I’m just going for the ride So when you ask me baby “Does it feel right?” I’ll try and tell you straight, I don’t know I just can’t shake it I’ll leave off now for New York June/July somewhere warm I’ll leave off now for New York Somewhere warm Maybe we’ll be right

We Are Born 04:30
We Are Born There’s a cold wind blowing down south Slowly chasing the rain From your window you can feel something At the end of the day we’re gone And you feel like you’ve been waiting We are born We go on To win some and lose some, the way is long We are born We go on To win some and lose some, you’re not alone In these modern times we’re still the same Living with fear Down the road should you think of me Think of me here A lifetime spent waiting We are born We go on To win some and lose some, the way is long We are born We go on To win some and lose some, you’re not alone It’s what I wanna say It’s what I wanna feel It’s what I wanna hold It’s what I wanna be
10.
Just This One Cold winter night Stayed out two weeks straight Three hours’ sleep most nights Don’t make a difference to me, I was lost anyway Where were you? Out drinking every night Lord I knew, but like I said before It don’t matter anyway You’re not mine, not mine to lose Only mine to relent I don't want to think about you anymore I don't want to hear about you anymore I don't want to sing about you anymore Just this one's for you I'll give you just this one I'll give you just this one

Closing In 04:20
Closing In A new moon is rising  Close to God, Lord, closing in Through a bedroom window  Hits her hair strawberry blonde
And you hold her closely  Close to God, Lord, closing in  Though the roof is leaking  Pots and pans ring like a drum
There are many roads to find forgiveness She’ll be waiting, waiting on a summer's day With the end closing in
Oh the child has made you  Close to God, Lord, closing in Fear the tide that binds you Should the years all come undone
There are many roads to find forgiveness She’ll be waiting, waiting on a summer's day With the end closing in
She is on her back now Close to God, Lord, closing in You regret the mayhem  She forgave most of it all

"Raw and direct, the album possesses a rich tapestry of tales, tasteful and heartfelt performances. Imbued with elemental Antipodean alt-country stylings, Gow’s world-class songs show once again he is essential listening.”
